Abstract

Textile fibres and filaments of a fibre-forming polymer, such as a polyamide or a polyester, have an essentially straight-sided pentagonalshaped cross-section which has three angles of approximately 90 degrees each, two of which are formed by the intersection of a common side with two parallel sides of essentially equal length, the other being opposite the common side and being formed at the intersection of the two remaining sides, the length of the sides of the cross-section being defined by the ratio of the lengths of two lines, the first of which (X) extends perpendicularly from the common side to the apex of the third right angle, and the second (X1) perpendicularly from a line parallel to the common side which connects the points of intersection of the parallel sides and the remaining sides to the apex of the third right angle, the ratio of the lengths X:X1 being from 1,5 to 3 and preferably 2. The cross-section may be symmetrical about a line bisecting the third right angle. The sides of the cross-section may be curved at their points of intersection to form rounded tips and may be slightly concave or convex. The fibres and filaments may be formed by means of a spinneret having one or more spinning orifices of a symmetrical Yshape and comprising also two circular parts communicating with and symmetrically placed on either side of the leg of the Y at a point spaced from both its ends. The leg of the Y may be longer than the arms. With some polymers an orifice of pentagonal cross-section may be used. The filaments are generally produced by melt spinning. A list of polymers which may be used for spinning the filaments is furnished. The fibres and filaments exhibit a diamond-like sparkle and reflect a substantial part of incident light in high intensity narrow beams. Specifications 905,895, 924,088, U.S.A. Specifications 2,130,523, 3,038,236 and 3,038,237 and French Specification 1,172,566 are referred to.
