Abstract
The process of Specification 979083 (wherein spontaneously crimping polyolefine filaments are produced by stretching to at least 1.5 times their original length composite filaments composed of two different mutually adherent polyolefine components side by side along the length of the filaments, the two components differing in their inherent viscosities by at least 0.1) is modified in that the bi-component filaments are tri-lobal filaments formed by melt-spinning the two components through three-armed spinneret orifices, i.e. orifices consisting of three slots radiating from a common centre and communicating with one another at that centre. The centres of the orifices may be vertically below the straight edge along which the two components unite, the slots of the orifices and the angles included therebetween being arranged symmetrically about said edge as a line of symmetry. Cooling air may be blown in to the composite filaments from a direction faced by one of the slots of each orifice, the component of lower viscosity flowing through this slot, which may be of different length from the other two slots, these being equal lengths. The stretched filaments may be allowed to crimp by release of tension. The crimpled filaments may be heatset in the slack state. The crimp effect of the filament is three dimensional, disappears when the filament is subjected to high tension, but reappears spontaneously when the tension is discontinued. The filaments are stapled and spun into yarn.
