Abstract

1,159,556. Producing synthetic filamentary yarn. C. FREUDENBERG. 30 Dec., 1966, No. 58430/66. Addition to 1,055,187. Heading B5B. Synthetic yarn is produced in a continuous manner by melt-extruding fibre-forming polymeric material through apertures arranged in one or more rows to form one or more sheets of continuous filaments, stretching the filaments while in the form of a sheet by gas streams discharged from slots one on each side of the or each row of apertures and adjacent and parallel to the or each row and leading the or each sheet of filaments together with its associated gas streams through an open-ended duct through which the filaments and gas pass without turbulence, the filaments being stretched and set whilst being kept parallel to but separate from one another, and collecting the filaments into bundles and subsequently forming the bundles of filaments into a yarn, e.g. by entangling or twisting and/or further drawing, which may precede the entangling or twisting or by taking up the bundles in rotating cans. The polymeric material may be extruded at a temperature not more than 20‹ C. above its melting temperature, the gas streams may be air streams and may be at the temperature of the melt or at a higher temperature and under pressure such that the air streams expand and cool adiabatically. The filaments may thus be stretched at a stretch ratio of at least 30 while travelling through a distance within 5 mm. of the apertures, the temperature of the air streams being such that all the molecular orientation obtained by this stretching is frozen in, and then leading the or each sheet of filaments, together with its associated air streams, through an open-ended duct. The filaments may have a denier of 1 or less than 1.
