Abstract
Garments are made by extruding a molten fibre-forming polymeric material e.g. polyamides, P.V.C. through apertures arranged in one or more rows to form one or more sheets of continuous filaments, stretching the filaments by gas streams forced out of slots one on each side of each row of apertures and adjacent and parallel to that row, and leading the or each sheet of filaments, together with its associated gas streams, through an open-ended duct through which the filaments and gas pass substantially without turbulence, the filaments being stretched and set whilst being kept parallel to and separate from one another, and forming a fleece by collecting the sheet or sheets of filaments on a carrier. A sheet may be made from such a fleece but preferably garments are made directly by forming the fleece on a carrier having the shape of the garment. Such a carrier may be rotated or vibrated. In an example, filaments are collected on a rotating screen carrier in the form of a pair of trunks or briefs and having an internal suction system. The carrier was so rotated as to form a uniform fleece of 100 grammes per square metre, which was sprayed with a bonding agent in the form of an acrylic resin dispersion and then dried into a solid, whereupon it was withdrawn from the carrier as a garment.
