Abstract

1,067,847. Forming fibrous mats. CARL FREUDENBERG CO. Nov. 18, 1963, No. 45442/63. Headings D1F, D1N and D1R. A uniform, non- woven fibrous mat having no capacity for delamination comprises continuous individual filaments (as may be produced in the manner described in Specification 1,053,222) randomly arranged in all directions throughout the entire thickness of the mat and individually entangled with one another. As shown in Fig. 1, freshly spun filaments in the form of a sheet passing through a duct (not shown) are stretched and carried forward (by streams of air emerging from slots 3 in a spinneret 1) to the nip between hollow perforated rollers 4 which, with rollers 5. form supports for endless perforated belts 6. The surface speed of the belts is much less than the speed at which the filaments are delivered to the nip, so that the filaments accumulate into a mat 7 between adjacent runs of the belts as they are advanced thereby. The air streams from slots 3 become turbulent before reaching the nip and thus oscillate the filaments which, as they approach the nip, are subjected to transverse air currents established by air entering suction chambers 8. The filaments are therefore seized irregularly by the turbulent air streams and interentangled. The process is stated to be applicable to the production of mats of staple fibres by blowing such fibres to the nip.
