Abstract

1,089,414. Filamentary structures. CARL FREUDENBERG. Nov. 30, 1964 [Nov. 29, 1963], No. 48584/64. Addition to 1,055,187. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] A non-woven fibre structure is made by extruding one molten fibre-forming polymeric material through apertures arranged in one or more rows to form a sheet or sheets of parallel continuous filaments df that material and another molten fibre-forming polymeric material through other apertures arranged in one or more other rows to form a sheet or sheets of parallel continuous filaments of that other material, stretching the filaments by gas streams forced out of slots one on each side of each row of apertures and adjacent and parallel to that row, and leading each sheet of filaments, together with its associated gas streams through: an open-ended duct through which the filaments and gas pass substantially without turbulence, the filaments being stretched and set whilst being- kept parallel to but separate from one another, and forming a fleece by collecting the sheets of filaments on a carrier. Preferably, all the apertures through which each sheet df filaments is formed are arranged in a single spinneret and different fibre-forming polymeric materials are extruded from adjacent spinnerets. A fleece may be formed by entangling the filaments on a mesh screen and subjecting the fleece to suction against the screen. The mesh screen may carry projections arranged in a pattern so that a fleece having this pattern is formed. Subsequently the fleece may be needled and/or calendered In an example, the two polymeric materials used are polypropylene and polycaprolactam. In apparatus as shown, the two polymeric materials are fed to pumps 1 and 2, pump 1 feeding alternate spinnerets and pump 2 feeding the remaining spinnerets, through a distributer 3 containing suitable baffles. Each spinneret comprises a row of apertures through which filaments 5 are extruded in sheets and along either side of each row is an air slot 4 through which streams of air are forced, parallel to and with the filaments, each sheet of filaments being guided by the air currents from slots 4 through an open-ended duct 6. Each duct vibrates about a spindle 7, all the ducts vibrating in. phase, and a fleece, is formed from the filaments on mesh screen 8, which is in the form of a conveyer having perforations 9 to which suction is applied and pyramidal projec- Lions 10, so that the fleece is continuously carried away.
