Abstract

1,269,974. Production of non-woven structures. LUTRAVIL SPINNVLIES G.m.b.H. 22 May, 1969 [24 May, 1968], No. 26263/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] Non-woven fleece-like structures are made from continuous filaments of polymeric materials by (i) extruding the filaments and collecting them into two or more sheets 1, 2 of linearly arranged filaments, one sheet having filaments different from those in the other sheet(s), (ii) leading each sheet individually by air streams through an open-eneded elongated duct 3, 4 arranged parallel to the duct(s) through which the other sheet(s) are led, (iii) positioning a deflector plate 5, 6 to deflect at least one sheet and its associated air streams, on emerging from the duct, to merge with the other sheet(s) into a single mixed sheet 7, and (iv) collecting the mixed sheet on a carrier 8 to form a fleece 11. Preferably all the sheets are deflected by plates, and the deflector plates are either inclined, as shown, so that the sheets and air streams strike the plates and are deflected, or convexly curved (Fig. 2, not shown) so that the sheets and air streams are led around them and deflected in an arcuate path. The carrier belt 8 moves more slowly than the sheets of filaments, and is porous with a suction device 9 beneath, to assist entanglement of the filaments. Heated rolls 12 help to consolidate the fleece 11, and this is collected in a funnel 13 to form rod-like elements. The sheets 1, 2 may have filaments of different diameters and/or different materials, e.g. two types of polypropylene (in the example), two polyesters, or a polyester and a polyamide.
