666,591. Forming fibrous mats; wadding. FIBREGLASS, Ltd. March 27, 1950 [March 29, 1949], No. 8467/49. Classes 120(i), 120(ii) and 142(iv) [Also in Group VIII] Apparatus for manufacturing mats or webs made of glass or other fibres comprises mechanical feeding means for withdrawing continuous strands of fibrous material from a source of supply and blowers arranged close to the feeding means and adapted to create air or gas streams for projecting the strands from the feeding means through the air onto a moving surface on which the strands are required to form a web or mat. As shown, Fig. 1, strands a of twisted or untwisted continuous or staple fibre are drawn from packages b and passed, singly or in groups, throuh a guide eye d, between nip rollers e or around a single cylindrical or conical roller, and through an air or other gas blower f, which projects each strand or group of strands in coiled form onto a moving conveyer g, to produce a web or mat h, in which the strands do not lie predominantly in one direction. A series of blowers f, is mounted across the exit side of rollers e. Each blower f, 'Fig. 5, has a bore j, through which the strand or strands pass and an inlet n, for gas or air under pressure; bore j may be provided with means for imparting a swirling motion to the gas stream. The web h may be sprayed with a binder solution or emulsion through nozzles o; or the binder may be atomised and sprayed by the blowers f. The web then passes through a drying oven p, and is wound into a roll r. Instead of forming a continuous web, pre-forms for the fabrication of laminated shapes may be be formed by connecting a perforated mould to an exhaust fan and rotating or passing it, before one or more of the blowers; the matted shape thus formed may then be impregnated with resin.
