Abstract
A rod-like filter for cigarettes comprises a plurality of polyolefin fibres extending there along and bonded together with a polyolefin material of lower melting point distributed throughout the mass of fibres. A crimped and blended tow, of total denier 50,000, composed of 17,000 filaments of isotactic polypropylene of melting point 170 DEG C. and 3,000 filaments of high density polyethylene of melting point 130 DEG C., is drawn off continuously from a supply at about 300 feet per minute by means of circumferentially grooved godet rolls. The tow is then opened up by means of air jets into a thin flat ribbon and taken up by a flattening roll system whence it is passed through a heating chamber wherein it is heated to between 115 DEG C. and 120 DEG C., the applied heat being controlled by the speed of the tow passing through. The ribbon of tow, while passing through the heater, is progressively contracted to a width of about 16 mm. by a set of godet rolls with peripheral grooves at the discharge end of the heater. The tow is then led into a funnel-shaped condensing former and the resulting rod is passed through a cooler, cut into suitable lengths and wrapped to form filter plugs. The filaments for use in the tow are obtained by melt extrusion through spinnerettes, sized to yield filaments of 6.25 denier, then blending in the desired proportions to form a mixed tow, which tow is then stretched and relaxed to give a net stretch ratio of 1.0 to 2.5. This stretching ratio produces partial molecular orientation of the fibres and is 25% of that required for full molecular orientation. The fibres of greater melting point should be at least 50% greater in total weight than the lower melting point fibres in the blended tow.
