1,172,038. Producing polyolefin tapes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 Oct., 1968 [9 Nov., 1967], No. 51104/67. Heading B5B. Polyolefin tapes are produced by melt extruding a crystallizable poly-α-olefin or a composition comprising at least one crystallizable poly-α-olefin in the form of a film which, while still at a temperature above its crystalline melting point is drawn in the direction transverse to the direction of extrusion at a draw ratio from 1À2 to 4À0 and subsequently drawn, while at a temperature below its crystalline melting point, in the direction of extrusion, the said film being slit in the direction of extrusion into a plurality of tapes either before or after said subsequent drawing. The polymeric material may be melt extruded to form a tubular film and "melt orientation" may be carried out in the freshly extruded film while the film is in a tubular shape and may be introduced in the longitudinal direction as well as in the transverse direction. The freshly extruded tube of film may be cooled by means of cooling air which first contacts the "shoulders" of the expanding bubble. The film may be slit to form a plurality of tapes and then subjected to longitudinal "crystallite orientation". The "crystallite orientation" may be carried out at a temperature not less than 30‹ C. below the crystallite melting point. The crystallizable poly-alpha-olefin may be polypropylene, "high-density" polyethylene, poly - 4 - methyl pentene - 1 or poly - 3 - methyl-butene. The crystallite orientation may be carried out at 100‹ to 130‹ C. The draw ratio which is used during the "crystallite orientation" may be at least 7:1 and not greater than 13:1. "Melt orientation" is defined as orientation which occurs due to stretching above the crystallite melting point and "crystallite orientation" is defined as orientation occurring due to stretching below the c.m.p. Tapes produced according to the process of the invention may be used in the production of coarse woven fabrics and sacks. The extruded film may be flat or in the form of a tube, preferably the latter, the drawing in the direction transverse to that of extrusion being in that case effected by inflation. The tapes produced according to the process of the invention are resistant to fibrillation. The crystallite melting point is the temperature at which a sample of the film observed under polarized light while being heated ceases to exhibit birefringence.
