Abstract
301,141. Gull, A. E. Sept. 14,1927. Apparatus for making filaments.-Apparatus for the manufacture of artificial silk by the dry-spinning method is constructed so that the current of air or gas with which the extended filaments are treated passes through the treating chamber, while in contact with the filaments, in the same direction as the filaments and has a greater velocity where the filaments leave the chamber than that with which it entered. Suitable apparatus comprises a jacketed chamber 2 in which filaments 5 extruded from a nozzle 4 pass down a tube 3 of gradually decreasing cross-sectional area together with a current of air or gas admitted through an inlet 2a. The air or gas is heated by a heater 6 and leaves the apparatus through an outlet 12b leading to a solvent-recovery plant. The filaments pass under a guide-pulley 7 and leave the apparatus through an outlet 2<c>; they may be first directed through any suitable twisting device so that they leave the apparatus as a single twisted thread. The tube 3 may have radiating ribs 3<b>.
