Abstract
A thin flat band of parallel filaments is made by extruding a number of filaments from a spinneret and passing them into a liquid which flows through a chamber, the cross-sectional area of which falls progressively from the entry end, where it is of circular cross-section, to a zone of rectangular cross-section, which then increases progressively in one dimension and decreases in the other dimension along said zone to provide a slot-like orifice from which the filaments emerge, the arrangement being such that the filaments will be uniformly distributed in the different portions by the flow currents thereby imparted to the liquid; the filaments are then removed from the liquid as a thin flat band of one or more layers of filaments, and the band is subjected to any necessary after-treatment, substantially without changing its width. Artificial filaments made by wet- or melt-spinning may be treated but the process is particularly applicable to the wet-spinning of polyvinyl alcohol filaments, in which event the liquid into which the filaments are passed may be a coagulating solution. For after-treatment, e.g. stretching, acetalisation, washing, oiling or drying, a number of bands made in this way may be arranged in parallel, side by side, or may be superimposed.
