Abstract

<PICT:0762959/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0762959/IV(a)/2> After treatment of freshly spun regenerated cellulose threads is effected with one or more high velocity jets of liquid or gas directed transversely to the moving thread whilst the thread is moved through the air and held freely in the path of the jet, so that the liquid or gas is forced between and into contact with individual filaments. Liquids may be used for chemical treatment or washing, and air for removing excess liquid or for drying. Fig. 1 shows a jet 1 with nozzle 2 for applying fluid to the moving thread 4 supported in V-shaped slits in guides 5, 6. The treating fluid may be allowed to escape or it may be retained in trough 10 and allowed to overflow through the V-shaped slots. Operating conditions are preferably chosen so that the filaments constituting the thread separate and vibrate under the action of the jet, e.g. for threads of denier 150-2200 the fluid is projected at 5-40 lb. per sq. in. through nozzles having an orifice of 0.02-0.1 in. Threads may be treated whilst travelling horizontally or vertically and individually or in warp form. Also, instead of being treated whilst travelling between two guides, jets may be directed against the thread as it passes over one of a pair of guides, or as it passes over or in the vicinity of a single guide. As shown in Fig. 3, viscose is extruded into a coagulating bath 31 and between godet 33 and roller 34 is subjected successively to the action of jets from nozzles 35-44 with air for removing excess coagulating liquid, dilute acid, water, a desulphurizing liquid, water, bleach, dilute acid, water, a textile finish and air, the threads finally passing through a drying chamber 45.
