Abstract

303,778. Gull, A. E. Oct. 5, 1927. Apparatus for making filaments.-Apparatus for the manufacture of artificial silk by the method in which the filaments are extruded into a chamber through which heated air is passed is so constructed that the air enters and leaves the chamber at the same end and flows to that end in contact with, and in the same direction as, the filaments. Suitable apparatus comprises a chamber 2 having an air inlet 2a and an air outlet 2<b>. The filaments extruded from a nozzle 3 pass down a central tube 4 surrounding which, at the lower end, is a sheet iron spiral duct 5. Between the duct 5 and the chamber 2 is an annular air-tight heating jacket 6 in which are disposed electric heaters 7, preferably heaters giving dark heat rays only. A thermostat 8 is provided also, the leads 7<a>, 7<b> of both the thermostat 8 and the heaters 7 being connected to a control 9. The air entering at 2a passes up the heated duct 5, down through the tube 4, and out at 2b, and is then led through solvent-collecting apparatus before being returned to the inlet 2<a>. The filaments pass under a guide pulley 11 and leave the apparatus through an outlet 2f. A number of chambers may be provided with their heaters interconnected and subject to a common control.
