Abstract
1300239 Heat treatment of filamentary materials CELANESE CORP 7 Oct 1970 [10 Oct 1969] 47616/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] A process for the controlled heating of organic filamentary materials to convert them, without loss of their filamentary integrity, into a form in which they are stable to heating at higher temperatures than they can normally withstand and can be carbonized, comprises feeding a multiplicity of strands of filamentary material 1 ... 8 continuously, while maintained parallel, into and through a heating zone 26 in which they are, heated by a hot gas, suitably air, and in which the parallel strands are festooned by passage alternately under and over parallel rolls 30, 32 and withdrawing the converted strands 50 while they are maintained parallel. The strands are conveniently fed from their individual supplies 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 over a grooved roll 38 where each strand enters an individual groove and is withdrawn for individual collection over a similar grooved roll 52. As illustrated the heating gas is preferably continuously recycled through the chamber via inlet 78, outlet 70, fan and heat source 72 and ducts 74, 76. Examples relate to the heat stabilization of continuous filaments of polyacrylonitrile, rayon, nylon 6T and poly-2,2-mphenylene-5,5<SP>1</SP>-bibenzimidazole.
