Abstract

1,148,022. Producing polyacetal fibres. CHEMCELL Ltd. 13 Nov., 1967, No. 51561/67. Addition to 962,231. Heading B5B. Polyacetal fibres having improved elastic recovery are produced by subjecting melt-spun polyacetal filaments which have been drawndown from the spinneret at a ratio of at least 25 but have not been subsequently stretched to a dry heat treatment at a temperature of at least 80‹ C. but below the melting temperature of the polyacetal under such conditions that shrinkage of the filaments occurs. The heat treatment may be carried out at a temperature of 120‹ to 150‹ C. It may be carried out at a temperature about 10‹ C. below the melting temperature of the polyacetal. The filaments may be subjected to the heat treatment while they are free to shrink without restraint. The expression " drawn-down ratio " is defined as the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the filament at the spinning orifice to that of the filament as it is taken up or passes over the first godet or other take-up means. The heat treatment may be carried out on staple fibres produced by cutting the filaments to staple length. When the treatment is carried out on the filaments, they may be held under sufficient tension to limit the shrinkage occurring, e.g. to 5 to 15% of their original length. In an example, polyacetal resin (trioxane/ethylene oxide copolymer containing 2% oxyethylene groups, melt index 2À5) is extruded at 212‹ C. through a spinneret and the extruded filaments cooled with air as they emerge from the spinneret. The loose yarn is then heat treated in an air oven at 150‹ C. for 30 minutes and then allowed to cool to room temperature.
