Abstract

Trilobal textile fibres of a synthetic organic polymer or a regenerated or modified natural organic polymer have a cross-section which has the general shape of an equilateral triangle, the sides of which are convex and have at least their central portions arcuate, and the angles or tip portions of which are arcuate and symmetrical about a straight line passing through the centre of the triangle and the centre of the tip, the extreme outer portions of the three tips defining a circumscribed circle having its centre equidistant from the tips, and the innermost point in each of the sides of the triangle falling on an inscribed circle, the centre of which is equidistant from these sides, the cross-section <PICT:0924090/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0924090/IV(a)/2> having a tip radius ratio r1/R and an arm angle A within the range represented by the cross-hatched area in Fig. 3, and a modification ratio M within the range represented by the cross-hatched area on Fig. 4. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, r1 is the radius of the tips of the triangular cross-section of the fibre, R is the radius of a circle a circumscribed about the tips b and having a centre c; A is the arm angle formed by extending a line tangential to both the convex side d and the arc generated by p the tip radius r1; M is the ratio of the radius R of the circumscribed circle to the radius R1 of a circle inscribed within the cross-section. In all the filaments of the invention, A is over 60 degrees, usually 70-150 degrees, M is 1,1-1,63, and r1/R is 0-0,71. The filaments exhibit maximum lustre when A is about 110 degrees, r1/R is about 0,3, and M is about 1,28. The fibres are made by extruding a spinning melt or solution through a spinneret having triangular orifices with sides which are straight or convex with respect to the axes, and correlating the spinning conditions, the shape of the orifices and the spinning melt or solution to give fibres of the specified cross-section. The spinneret orifices may be as shown in Fig. 5, in which R1 is the radius of curvature of the sides of the orifice, R2 is the distance between the centres of circles circumscribed about the tips and R3 is the radius of such circles. Examples are given of the melt-spining of polyethylene terephthalate filaments having the specified triangular cross-section. A long list is given of other synthetic polymers which may be used. The filaments have a marked lustre combined with resistance to wrinkling and soiling and are <PICT:0924090/IV(a)/3> <PICT:0924090/IV(a)/4> <PICT:0924090/IV(a)/5> particularly useful in bulked form. Specifications 847,147, 869,301, 905,895 and 924,087 are referred to.
