Abstract

<PICT:0818215/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0818215/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0818215/IV (a)/3> <PICT:0818215/IV (a)/4> Synthetic filaments having an annular crosssection are produced by extruding a filamentforming solution through a spinneret having extrusion orifices, each having the shape of a sector of a circle subtended by an angle of approximately 210 degrees, into a dry-spinning cabinet, and drafting the filaments while drying them. The filament-forming solution may be a solution of a cellulose organic acid ester, e.g. cellulose acetate in acetone. As shown, filaments 25 extended through orifices 14 of spinneret 13 initially have C-shaped cross-sections, but controlled drafting and drying cause the arms of the C to unite, as shown in Fig. 4. The filaments may be drafted at a draft ratio above 0.6, the latter being defined as the ratio of the linear velocity of wind-up to the linear velocity of extrusion of the filaments. Preferably the filaments are dried between 60 DEG and 90 DEG C. Comparative examples are given. U.S.A. Specifications 1,695,455, 1,773,969, 2,000,047, 2,000,048 and 2,373,892 are referred to.
