Abstract

<PICT:0883795/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0883795/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0883795/IV (a)/3> Cellulose ester filaments of H-shaped cross-section, the horizontal of the H being shorter than either of the verticals of the H, are made by dry-spinning a solution of a cellulose organic acid ester through a spinneret having square orifices, drafting the filaments in the cabinet at a draft ratio of 0,7-1,43 and passing an evaporative medium through the cabinet to dry the filaments at a temperature of 60-90 DEG C. Specified cellulose esters include cellulose acetate and single and mixed organic acid esters of cellulose in which the acids have 2-4 carbon atoms. As shown, spinning solution is supplied via candle filter 12 to spinneret 13, having square orifices 14. Heated air is supplied to the cabinet via conduits 23, 24 and removed via conduit 26. In drying, the filaments gradually change from their original square cross-section to the specified H form. Godet roll 20 is driven uniformly at a linear speed which, compared with the linear rate of extrusion of the spinning solution, yields the required draft ratio. The filaments pass next over guide rolls 21 and, after being twisted, are wound on to bobbin 22. U.S.A. Specifications 2,000,047 and 2,000,048 are referred to.
