Abstract

<PICT:0884203/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0884203/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0884203/IV (a)/3> <PICT:0884203/IV (a)/4> Tobacco smoke filter elements comprise a rod-like mass of non-woven continuous filaments of a cellulose organic acid ester, the filaments being of Y-shaped cross-section. Cellulose acetate is preferred, but other single and mixed organic acid esters of cellulose, e.g. those of acids having 2 to 4 carbon atoms, may also be used. The filaments, which may be crimped, are made by dry-spinning a cellulose ester solution through a spinneret having orifices of triangular or modified triangular shape and drafting the filaments while drying them in the cabinet, whereby they assume a Y-shaped cross-section. Drying temperatures of 60 DEG -90 DEG C. are specified, and draft ratios of 0,7-1,2. As shown, spinning solution is supplied via a candle filter 12 to a spinneret 13 having a number of orifices 14 which may be of equilateral shape as in Fig. 2, yielding filaments as in Fig. 4. Alternatively the orifices may be of isosceles triangular shape, e.g. (24 DEG , 78 DEG , 78 DEG ) (84 DEG , 48 DEG , 48 DEG ) or (48 DEG , 66 DEG , 66 DEG ) or of scalene triangular shape, e.g. (78 DEG , 60 DEG , 42 DEG ), yielding filaments of slightly different shape (not shown). The orifices may also be of polygonal shape, e.g. Fig. 13, derived from an equilateral triangular orifice whose sides have been reduced to two-thirds of the length by removal of one-sixth of each side at each corner, the sides being then connected by arcs. Two further polygonal orifices (not shown) are derived from equilateral triangular orifices whose sides have been reduced to three-fifths and one half the length by removal of one-fifth and one-quarter of each side respectively, the sides being then connected by arcs. The filaments obtained from these spinnerets are of slightly different shape (not shown). Heated air is supplied to the cabinet 11 via conduits 23, 24, and removed at 26. Godet roll 20 is driven uniformly at a linear speed which, compared with the linear rate of extrusion of the spinning solution, yields the required draft ratio. The filaments then pass over guide roll 21 and, after being twisted, are wound on to bobbin 22. Specification 765,963 is referred to.
