Abstract

In wet-spinning apparatus in which a bundle of filaments is formed by extruding a spinning solution through a multi-hole spinneret submerged in a bath of a coagulating liquid and in which the filaments travel from the spinneret to a thread guide through a completely submerged straight tube open at both ends, the centre of the spinneret face, the axis of the tube and the point of contact of the filaments with the thread guide being in alignment and the inlet end of the tube being a short distance from the face of the spinneret, the tube comprises two cylindrical portions of different diameter, the first portion, starting from the spinneret, having an internal diameter which somewhat exceeds that of the outer ring of spinneret orifices and being connected, by means of a gradually widening intermediate portion having the shape of a truncated cone, to a second portion of the tube of which the internal diameter is greater than that of the first portion. The inlet opening of the tube is preferably flared. The sloping sides of the intermediate truncated cone portion are preferably at a small angle to one another. In the example viscose containing 0.16 per cent of quinoline is spun through a 1060 hole spinneret into a conventional acid and salt spinning bath, the diameter of the outer ring of orifices being 16 mm. The filaments thus formed are drawn through a tube submerged in the bath and consisting of two cylindrical portions having inner diameters 21 and 27 mm. and lengths 30 and 19 cm. respectively. These portions are joined by an intermediate portion 4 cm. long. The outer diameter of the trumpet-shaped inlet opening is 4 cm. and this opening is situated 2 cm. from the spinneret face. The draw-off speed is 40 m/min. The apparatus reduces thread breakages at high spinning speeds and is advantageous when spinning viscoses containing quinoline or other substances which retard regeneration of the cellulose, e.g. organic substances which temporarily form chelates with zinc salts in the coagulation bath. Specification 655,516 and U.S.A. Specification 827,434 are referred to.
