Abstract

A modification is described in the apparatus of the parent Specification, according to which artificial threads are wet-spun by extruding a spinning solution from a spinneret submerged in a bath of coagulating liquid in a spinning trough and the filaments travel from the spinneret to a thread guide through a conpletely submerged straight tube open at both ends, the centre of the spinneret face, the axis of the tube and the point of contact of the filaments with the thread guide being in alignment, and the inlet end of the tube being a short distance from the face of the spinneret, the tube comprising two cylindrical portions of different diameter, the first portion of the tube, starting from the spinneret, having an internal diameter which only slightly exceeds that of the outer ring of spinneret orifices, and being connected by means of a gradually widening intermediate portion to the second cylindrical portion, which is wider than the first tube portion. This apparatus is now modified in that the zone between the spinneret face and the opposite tube opening communicates with the surrounding space of the spinning bath by means of at least two annular channels coaxial with the spinneret and the tube, the channels providing paths through which, during the spinning operation, the coagulation liquid can flow from the portion of the spinning bath surrounding the zone into and through the zone and into the tube. The annular channels are preferably provided by arranging between the spinneret and the tube opening facing it one or more flat rings, the inner diameter of which is at least equal to the diameter of the outer ring of spinneret orifices and the outer edge of which projects beyond the circumference of the mouth of the tube. The ring or rings lie in a plane or planes normal to the axis of the tube, and are preferably provided with perforations. If the entrance to the tube is flared, the ring or rings may be given a similar and similarly directed form, and they preferably taper towards the interior of the tube.
