Abstract

<PICT:0573403/IV/1> <PICT:0573403/IV/2> <PICT:0573403/IV/3> <PICT:0573403/IV/4> <PICT:0573403/IV/5> <PICT:0573403/IV/6> Artificial filaments, films, and the like, are obtained by extruding a solution of a filament or film-forming material, e.g. viscose, cuprammonium cellulose, cellulose acetate or artificial resin solutions through a spinneret submerged in a coagulating bath, the extruded material in its nascent state being protected from cross-currents in the bath by a sleeve associated with and extending in line with the spinneret. The sleeve which has an inner diameter of from one half to twice the diameter of the face of the spinneret, is releasably mounted on and supported by the spinneret or jet union to which the spinneret is attached, and extends from behind the face of the spinneret, passageways being provided between the jet union and the sleeve to permit coagulating liquid to flow into the sleeve adjacent the face of the spinneret. A spinneret 3, Fig. 2, is attached to a spinning solution supply line 1 by the jet union 2. A collar 6, attached to the female part of the union 4 by a bayonet joint, has a central chamber 12. A sleeve 7 with a tapered central bore 8 is fitted to the collar 6. Passageways 11 are provided in the collar to permit the spinning bath liquid to pass into the region adjacent the face of the spinneret. In a modification, Fig. 4, concentric sleeve members 26, 27 are adapted to slip over and engage the side wall of the spinneret 23. The sleeve members are rotatable relative to each other and are provided with longitudinal slots 30, 31, Fig. 3, which enable the sleeves to be applied to or removed from the spinneret without interrupting the spinning operation. In another modification, Fig. 6, the sleeve 46 having a conical shaped portion 48, is clamped by a collar 45 to the jet union 41. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the sleeve is made in two halves 65 and 66, pivotally mounted on pins 67 and 68 respectively and which are held together when in operative position by a latch 71, Fig. 7.
