Abstract

318,631. British Celanese, Ltd., (Assignees of Whitehead, W., and Dreyfus, C.). Sept. 8, 1928, [Convention date]. Apparatus for making filaments.-The extrusian orifices used for the manufacture of artificial silk. horsehair, bristles, &c. instead of being circular cross-section, are of compact or squat-shape having indentations in the form of re-entrant angles, for example as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 5, and 6. By the use of these orifices, more uniform filaments are obtained. Substantially similar effects are obtained by the use of a cluster of small circular orifices as illustrated in Fig. 4 arranged so close together that the filaments after extrusion coalesce to form a single filament. The spinning solution may be viscose, cuprarnmonium cellulose, or nitrocellulose, and particularly cellulose acetate or other organic derivatives of cellulose; and the filaments may be formed by the dry or evaporative method, or by coagulation using water or acid baths.
