Abstract

318,629. British Celanese, Ltd., (Assignees of Whitehead, W., and Dreyfus, C.). Sept. 8, 1928, [Convention date]. Cellulose carboxylates, ethers, and xanthates; unspecified cellulose soleations. - Filaments, bristles, artificial hair, or the like, having hollow spaces therein, are produced by extruding a solution of cellulose acetate or other derivative of cellulose, such as an ester or ether, into an atmosphere having a low evaporative power to produce a slow initial solidication of the filaments or the like, and then passing the filaments through an atmosphere having a high evaporative power to produce rapid solidification. According to one method of procedure, the filaments are extruded into an evaporative atmosphere maintained below the boiling point of the solvent used, and then passed through an atmosphere at a temperature considerably higher than the boiling point of the solvent. A .further method of carrying out the process is by causing the extruded filaments to pass through an atmosphere that is nearly saturated with a solvent vapour, or with the vapours of the solvent evolved from the filaments themselves, and then passing through a drying atmosphere having a low content of solvent vapour. Since the filaments remain plastic for some distance of their travel through the drying atmosphere, they may be drawn out at or near the jet to give hollow filaments or fine denier. The, Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the process of extruding the filaments, &c. into a coagulation bath which acts merely to skin the surface of the filaments and then passing them into a bath which causes rapid solidification of the interior of the filaments. The application of the process to the spinning of viscose is also mentioned. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
