Abstract

546,979. Artificial silk. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and DAWSON D. S. Feb. 6, 1941, No. 1580. [Class 2 (ii)] In order to prevent crystallization of sodium sulphate on the filaments or the apparatus when producing artificial filaments by the viscose process, the filaments are enclosed, during their passage from the spinning bath to the collecting device, in a compartment in which a humid atmosphere is maintained by means of sprays of water, water-vapour, or steam. The humidity of the workshop may thus be maintainedat a relatively low value. As shown in Fig. 1, the filaments D issue from nozzle C which is immersed in the coagulating bath R. The filaments pass through guide E around godet F, then to godet G, funnel H, and centrifugal box J. The front of the machine is closed during normal working by hinged windows K. Water or water-vapour is introduced into the enclosure through spraying-nozzles M. Air is drawn from the enclosure through chamber N surrounding the spinning box and also if desired through holes P.
