Abstract

A solution of polyvinyl alcohol or other polyvinyl hydroxy compound which is soluble in water or other aqueous solution is extruded into an aqueous solution of ammonium sulphate of such a high concentration that it is capable of coagulating the solution of the polyvinyl compound, and the filaments or yarns obtained are collected and dried and then passed through a tensioning device which scrapes away from the surface of the yarns the bulk of the salt adherent thereto. The yarns have a soft feel and the individual fibres are not adherent to one another. In an example, a 15 per cent solution in water of polyvinyl alcohol containing 1 per cent of lauryl pyridinium chloride, calculated on the weight of the polyvinyl alcohol, is heated and extruded while hot into a 35 per cent aqueous solution of ammonium sulphate at 50 DEG C. The filaments are stretched by 410 per cent while passing between two stretching rollers, and the yarn obtained is collected in a centrifugal spinning pot. The cakes of yarn are dried at 60 DEG C. They are then unwound and the yarn is passed through a tensioning device under a tension of 1 gram per denier so that the saline dust is scraped off the surface of the yarn. A grid type of tensioning frame may be used. The yarn is flexible and is soluble in water. It may be used as a temporary yarn in the production of imitation embroidery.
