587,801. Elastic fabric. INTERNATIONAL LATEX PROCESSES, Ltd. Jan. 2, 1945, No. 120. Convention date, Feb. 24, 1944. [Classes 42 (i) and 140] Elastic fabric is made by gathering up opposite edges of an extensible textile fabric, stretching the fabric by moving these edges apart while the fabric is free to contract in a direction parallel to these edges and applying a layer of elastic material while the fabric is so stretched. The gathering and stretching may be of such extent as to cause the fabric to contract 15 per cent. or more of its normal length. The gathers may be formed by a sewing machine and stitched in place, or, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, may be produced by intermeshing gears 47, 48, and held in place by pins 50 in chains 53 of a tenter machine 44. Fig. 1 shows previously gathered fabric 12 from roll 14 travelling in the direction of the arrow at A and stretched sideways by the diverging tenter chains. At points 19 the chains assume a parallel course and then a rubber containing fluid 20 is applied by doctor blade 21 to form a coating 22 which is converted into an elastic medium and vulcanized if desired in drier 23. Two examples of suitable rubber mixes are given, or, instead of rubber a styrene-butadiene copolymer may be used. U.S.A. Specification 2,004,110 is referred to.
