Abstract

Monofilaments consisting of or containing a major proportion of highly crystalline isotactic polypropylene are produced by an extrusion process in which the temperature at the input end of the extruder is 20 DEG -100 DEG C. above the melting point of the polypropylene and decreases along the length of the extruder so that the temperature at the extrusion head is 0 DEG -40 DEG C. above the melting point of the polypropylene. The temperature at the input end of the extruder is preferably 200 DEG -250 DEG C. and at the extruder head 170 DEG -180 DEG C. The extruded filaments may be quenched in a bath of water maintained at a temperature of 40 DEG -50 DEG C. and may be stretched continuously or wound up on bobbins and subsequently stretched. The filaments may be stretched at a stretch ratio between 1:7 and 1:9 between two slow rollers and two fast rollers between which is placed a thermo-controlled metal plate or a heated bath of liquid, e.g. water, at a temperature between room temperature and the melting point of the polypropylene, e.g. at 130 DEG C. After stretching, the filaments may be subjected to thermal stabilization either under tension or in a state of controlled or free shrinkage. If the filaments are to be used as bristles in brushes, their ends may be conically tapered by periodically varying the speed of the collecting rollers immediately after spinning. The filaments may be used for making filters, nets, fishing lines, marine ropes, tapestries, handbags, suitcases, shoes, tents, doormats and air carpets.
