Abstract

Woven fabrics containing regenerated cellulose fibres having a degree of crystallinity above 50% are treated with an aqueous solution of a swelling agent for the cellulose. The fabrics may consist wholly of the highly crystalline regenerated cellulose fibres, or may include synthetic fibres or regenerated cellulose fibres of low crystallinity. The treatment is suitably carried out by impregnating the fabrics preferably on conventional mercerizing apparatus, with an aqueous solution containing 5-80% by weight of sodium or potassium hydroxide, sodium zincate or zinc chloride, at 15 DEG -40 DEG C. for 15-50 seconds. The treated fabrics have less tendency to fray, show increased lustre and tensile strenght, and possess properties similar to those imparted to cotton by conventional mercerization. The swelling treatment may be followed by a compressive shrinkage treatment. In examples, a fabric woven entirely from regenerated cellulose fibres having a crystallinity of 53-63% are treated with 6% NaOH at 29,5 DEG C. and 18% NaoH at 39 DEG C. for 25 seconds. Specification 730,226 is referred to.
