Abstract

1,187,110. Shrinkproofing keratinous fibres. ENTERPRISE MINIERE ET CHIMIQUE. 29 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., 1966], No. 59227/67. Heading D1P. The felting and/or shrinking tendency of keratinous textile fibres, e.g. wool, is reduced by treating the fibres with an aqueous solution of a N-chloro-substituted isocyanuric acid derivative or water-soluble salt thereof, e.g. trichloroisocyanuric acid, dichloroisocyanuric acid or a water soluble salt thereof thickened by the addition thereto of a natural or synthetic thickener chemically inert with respect to the N-chloro substituted isocyanuric acid or salt thereof and having a pH of 3-6.5 and an available chlorine content of 10-50g per Kg of the fibres. The thickening agent may be a natural or synthetic gum, e.g. guar gum, an esterified or etherified starch, carboxymethyl cellulose, an alginate, polyvinyl alcohol or an alkali metal polyacrylate, and may be used in a concentration such that the composition has a viscosity which varies from 10 to 1000 centipoises for rate gradients of 100 to 300 seconds. The composition may also contain sodium bicarbonate and isocyanuric acid, or acetic acid. The keratinous fibres alone or in admixture with synthetic fibres, e.g. polyester and/or polyamide fibres, may be in the form of carded or combed tows, threads or cloth. The textile material may be passed through the composition and then held at 10‹-35‹C for 15-300 seconds, rinsed with running water, squeezed, treated with a solution having a pH of about 4 of sodium meta-bisulphite, sodium hydrosulphite or other dechlorinating agent, rinsed with water, squeezed and dried in a stream of hot air. Alternatively after treatment with the composition the fibres may be passed into an aqueous solution of an organic or inorganic acid e.g. hydrochloric acid, of pH value 2-5 for 3-30 seconds, squeezed, dechlorinated and rinsed with water.
