Abstract

954,860. Polyacrylonitrile filaments. TOHO RAYON KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Sept. 12, 1961 [Sept. 24, 1960], No. 32636/61. Heading B5B. A coagulated tow of polyacrylonitrile filaments, spun from a solution of polymer comprising mainly polyacrylonitrile in an aqueous spinning solvent comprising zinc chloride as the principal salt constituent, is contacted at 70- 100‹ C. with a 1-20% by weight aqueous solution of a compound which will react with zinc ions to produce complex ions Preferably the tow is contacted at 90-100‹ C. with a 5-15% by weight aqueous solution of the compound producing complex ions. Compounds specified include sodium chloride, potassium chloride, ammonium chloride, urea, and thiourea. After leaving the coagulating bath, the tow may be stretched at a moderate temperature, e.g. in water or a humid atmosphere and then immersed in an aqueous bath containing the desalting compound. Zinc compounds otherwise retained in the tow thereby diffuse and dissolve out into the solution as water-soluble complex ions. Specification 732,008 is referred to.
