Abstract
1,256,790. Viscose preparation. KESKUSLABORATORIO - CENTRALLABORATORIUM A.B. OY. 15 May, 1969 [24 May, 1968; 17 July, 1968], No. 24901/69. Heading C3A. Viscose is prepared by, before xanthation, subjecting the aged alkali cellulose to at least one steeping and pressing treatment, at which an aqueous NaOH solution of a concentration lower than 15% by weight is used for at least one steeping, the re-steeping and pressing steps reducing the amount of NaOH to produce a second alkali cellulose with an NaOH to cellulose weight ratio of 0À5 or less, xanthating the second alkali cellulose with carbon disulphide, and dissolving the resulting xanthate in dilute NaOH solution or water to yield the viscose. The first steeping of the aged alkali cellulose may be carried out with aqueous NaOH solution of a concentration of 10-12% by weight. The amount of carbon disulphide utilized in the xanthation step in the manufacture of viscose for rayon staple and film is from 14- 25%, for rayon filament and high wet modulus type rayon staple less than 32%, for rayon cord less than 35%, for polynosic fibre less than 40%, based on the weight of cellulose in the alkali cellulose to be xanthated. Xanthation may be effected at above 35‹ C., e.g. 35-40‹ C., for less than 40 minutes. The viscose preparation is preferably carried out as a continuous process.
