Abstract

1,258,773. Highly crimped rayon filaments. ITT RAYONIER Inc. 9 April, 1969 [9 April, 1968], No. 18070/69. Heading B5B. Highly crimped, high strength rayon filaments are made by spinning a modified viscose at 18-40‹ C. into a coagulating bath to produce coagulated, incompletely regenerated filaments, which are withdrawn from the bath, and whilst still substantially soluble in dilute alkali, are stretched to a draw ratio of 1À2 to 2À8 and simultaneously washed with hot dilute acid; then, while the filaments are still less than 50% regenerated, they are relaxed by between 20 and 60% and treated with a dilute alkaline solution of pH from 7À5 to 10À0; finally regeneration is completed, and the highly crimped filaments (or staple fibres, if the filaments are cut at this stage), are desulphurized and washed. The modified viscose is prepared from cellulose xanthate having a degree of polymerization of from 450 to 800 and balanced contents of cellulose and sodium hydroxide, each of from 4 to 9% by weight, and is modified by the addition of a mixture of 1 to 3% by weight dimethylamine and 0À5 to 2À5% by weight polyethylene glycol, based on the weight of the cellulose. Preferably, the modified viscose has a ball fall viscosity of 20 to 150 sees., a salt index of 7 to 12, and a gamma number of 40 to 90. Spinning may be effected at 20-25‹ C., and a preferred coagulating bath contains 0À2 to 2% by weight formaldehyde, 1-6% anhydrous zinc sulphite, 7-18% anhydrous sodium sulphate and 3-9% by weight sulphuric acid. The hot dilute acid bath suitably contains 0À5-5% by weight sulphuric acid, especially 3%, and may be held at from 60-100‹ C., preferably 80‹ C. The alkaline treatment solution may contain sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydroxide, and the relaxed filaments may be treated therein for from 2 sees. at 100‹ C. to 120 sees. at 20‹ C. Filaments so made have 30 to 150 crimps per inch (relaxed), a conditioned tenacity greater than 3 gpd., wet tenacity greater than 2 gpd., and a wet modulus greater than 0À4 gpd.
