Abstract

980,055. Polyacrylonitrile filaments. TOHO RAYON KABUSHIKI KAISHA. May 29, 1961 [June 8, 1960], No. 19251/61. Heading B5B. In the wet-spinning of filaments from spinning solutions of acrylic polymers, which contain at least 85% acrylonitrile in the molecule, and aqueous saline solvent containing zinc chloride alone, or a mixture of a major proportion of zinc chloride and a minor proportion of another water-soluble metallic chloride and/or a miscible organic substance, the spun gel-tows are washed in at least one acidified water-bath which is, or all of which are, at a temperature below 70‹ C., while controlling and maintaining the pH of the, or at least one, bath at a value not greater than 3. Preferably the temperature of the bath or baths is from 15‹ to 70‹ C. Hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, phosphoric, acetic or formic acid may be used as the acid in the acidic bath or baths. Water or an aqueous solution of a metallic chloride may be used as the coagulating bath, which is preferably kept below 40‹ C. An acid bath containing from 2N to ION acid may be provided between the coagulating bath and subsequent water baths. Filaments so made have lower residual salt concentrations than filaments which have been merely water-washed.
