Abstract

300,672. Ellis, G. B., (Soc. pour la Fabrication de la Soie Rhodiaseta). Aug. 10, 1927. Apparatus for making filaments ; cellulose carboxylates, processes for making filaments from.-For the production by the dry-spinning method of artificial silk filaments not exhibiting a scintillating effect. the solution of cellulose acetate, &c. to be spun, is heated before its extension while a cold evaporative atmosphere is introduced into the cell at the region of the extension nozzles and in such a manner that it moves in the same direction as the filaments. The evaporative medium may be air-drawn from the spinning room, and it may be subjected to a supplementary cooling inside the cell; the atmosphere is preferably admitted into the cell through apertures of large dimensions. As shown, the solution before extrusion at the nozzles 2 passes through a heater 3; cool air is admitted to the cell 1 through inlets 4, and in this form passes along with the filaments during the whole of their travel through the cell, being heated at the later part in order to ensure evaporation of the solvent, by a heater 5 surrounding the cell. Operating in this manner, filaments of less than one denier may be spun, and speeds of spinning of 400 metres per minute or higher may be employed. Specifications 236,393 and 248,696 are referred to.
