Abstract

314,404. British Celaaese, Ltd., Payne, R. W., and Roberts, R. P. Dec. 23, 1927. Cellulose esters and ethers, processes for making filaments from; apparatus for making filaments.-Artificial silks exhibiting a reduced lustre or even a dull matte lustreless appearance, are obtained by the dry-spinning of solutions in volatile solvents of cellulose acetate or other organic acid esters of cellulose or of cellulose ethers, the filaments being extruded into an atmosphere containing one or more organic precipitants for cellulose acetate &c., or the spinning solution containing such a quantity of one or more organic precipitants and the spinning conditions being so chosen that the latter exert a precipitating action on the cellulose acetate &c. during the early stages of filament-formation. Suitable precipitants are-alcohols, such as ethyl alcohol and cyclohexanol; hydrocarbons such as benzene, xylene, petrol and petroleum ether; esters such as butyl propicnate; and ethers such as propyl ether. When the precipitant is added to the evaporative atmosphere it is convenient to introduce it into the cell either in the form of a vapour or as a spray at a point in the path of travel of the filaments at which the latter are still wet with the solvent, that is, within a few inches of the spinning nozzle, and it is convenient to provide a separate inlet for each group of filaments. The degree of delustring depends on the temperature maintained in the cell. When the precipitant is added to the spinning solution, the quantity employed may be 1-40 per cent, preferably 5-30 per cent, of the quantity of volatile solvent; the degree to which delustring takes place depends on the proportion of precipitant added and the temperature of spinning, being generally greater as the proportion of precipitant is higher and the temperature is lower.
