Abstract

Artificial filaments, threads, yarns, ribbons, and the like are obtained by dry-spinning, at a speed of at least 180 metres per minute, into an evaporative atmosphere maintained at a temperature at least as high as that of the spinning solution, a solution of an organic derivative of cellulose of 25 per cent or less concentration and containing a liquid increasing its viscosity. The solution preferably has a viscosity of 1,5 to 2 or more times that of a normal solution of the same concentration. As suitable liquids for increasing the viscosity there are mentioned non-solvents, strongly acting precipitants, gelling agents and latent solvents, e.g. hydrocarbons, alcohols, water, methylene chloride, or ethyl acetate. Certain non-solvents such as water or alcohol require to be added in a proportion greater than that which will give a reduced viscosity to the solution. Other agents mentioned for use with acetone-soluble cellulose acetate or nitro-acetate are methyl acetate, ethyl formate, methyl alcohol, water, benzene, toluene, xylene, petroleum fractions, methylene chloride, ethylene chloride, chloroform, dichlorethylene, trichlorethylene, methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl ketone, and dimethyl ethylene glycol. Examples are given of the application as solvents for cellulose acetate of mixtures comprising water, methyl acetate, methyl alcohol, and acetone; water, ethyl acetate, and acetone; water, methyl alcohol, and acetone; alcohol, benzene and acetone (for lower acetates); water, ethyl alcohol and acetone. According to the Provisional Specification, the solution of low concentration and high viscosity may be obtained by dissolving in a normal solvent a derivative of high viscosity characteristics.
