Abstract
A solution of cellulose triacetate in methylene chloride, or in a solvent consisting chiefly of methylene chloride, is spun into a coagulating liquid containing more than 25% of methylene chloride by weight and a 1 to 3 carbon atom aliphatic alcohol, preferably methanol, and the filaments thus formed are stretched during their passage through the coagulating liquid. The conditions employed are predetermined to yield yarn having a tenacity of at least 1.8 grams per denier coupled with an extensibility of more than 18%, as determined by described methods. Both maximum tenacity and maximum extensibility are generally obtained when the coagulating liquid contains about 50% by weight of methylene chloride. The cellulose triacetate should have an acetyl value of at least 60%, and preferably above 61%, calculated as acetic acid. Its intrinsic viscosity (as determined by a described method) should be about 1.5 to 3, and especially 2 to 3. The spinning solvent may contain a small proportion of a 1 to 3 carbon atom aliphatic alcohol, e.g. up to 15% by weight of methanol on an anhydrous basis. The concentration of cellulose triacetate in the spinning solution may be about 18 to 26%, especially 20 to 23%, by weight, and the viscosity of the solution at the spinning temperature may be about 500 to 6000 poises. The temperature at which the solution is spun is preferably between about 15 DEG and 45 DEG C. The coagulating liquid is preferably also at a temperature between 15 DEG and 45 DEG C., and especially between 15 DEG and 40 DEG C. In general the concentration of methylene chloride on an anhydrous basis to be used in the coagulating liquid is within the range defined by the formula 75.25 - (T \sB 5)%, where T is the temperature of the liquid in degrees centigrade. The coagulating liquid preferably does not contain more than 4% by weight of water. The draw-down ratio of the filaments in the coagulating liquid may be between 15 and 3.5 to 1, preferably between 10 and 5 to 1. The take-up speed may be above 100 metres per minute. In an example, a 24% solution of cellulose triacetate in a 90.5 : 9.5 wt/wt. methylene chloride-methanol mixture is spun into a coagulating bath comprising a methylene chloride-methanol 48 : 52 wt/wt. mixture at a temperature of 27 DEG C., and the filaments are drawn from the bath at a drawdown ratio of 5.8 : 1 and wound up on a roll at the rate of 90 metres per minute.
