Abstract

Filaments &c. are produced by dry spinning a solution of a cellulose ester into an atmosphere maintained above the boiling point of the solvent and consisting of the superheated solvent vapour alone or mixed with up to an equal volume of air or other inert gas. The solvent may be acetone but more particularly the esterifying mixture in which the cellulose acetate is produced. In such a mixture the solvent may consist wholly of an aliphatic acid (particularly an aliphatic acid containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms) or may also contain a small proportion of water after the ester has been ripened, or may consist of a mixture of the acid with the acid anhydride used to esterify the cellulose. The invention is most advantageously applied to the production of filaments &c. from triesters of cellulose in solution in the mixture of acid and anhydride in which they are produced. The atmosphere into which the ester solution is spun may then consist of the super-heated aliphatic acid and/or aliphatic acid-anhydride. In an example, a solution of cellulose acetate in an esterifying mixture boiling at 123 DEG C. and consisting of acetic acid and acetic anhydride in which the sulphuric acid catalyst has been neutralized with magnesium acetate is extruded at 100 DEG C. through a conventional spinning jet into a closed spinning cabinet heated electrically to 180 DEG C. The cabinet is sealed except for a small aperture for the withdrawal of the yarn and a vapour exit line to a condenser. The spinning is conducted without admission of air using normal take-up equipment and a feed roller speed of 135 metres per minute. The process of the invention has the advantage over conventional dry spinning into heated air that the solvent can be recovered by simple condensation. Specification 791,367 is referred to.
