Abstract
Cellulose triacetate solutions are made by bringing together the solid cellulose triacetate and such a quantity of methylene chloride, or of a mixture of methylene chloride and up to 25% by weight of an aliphatic alcohol containing up to 4 carbon atoms in the molecule, as will yield a solution containing more than 20% by weight of cellulose triacetate, and heating the mixture to above 55 DEG C., while agitating it, the heating being carried out in a closed vessel and so that the temperature rises above 35 DEG C. before complete solution of the cellulose triacetate and being continued after the cellulose acetate has dissolved for a time sufficient to effect a substantial improvement in the filter ability of the solution. The solution may contain up to 2% by weight of acetone and may be dry-spun to produce filaments.
