Abstract

A composition suitable for spinning filaments comprises 16-18% by weight of cellulose acetate, having a combined acetic acid value of 59,8-60,6%, dissolved in a mixture of methyl acetate and acetone containing 20-80% by weight of methyl acetate. The cellulose acetate preferably has a combined acetic acid value of about 60,0%, and the solvent mixture preferably contains about 64% by weight of methyl acetate. The composition may contain minor proportions of substances which have no substantial effect on the spinnability of the solution (e.g. pigments), and the solvent mixture should contain not more than 0,6% by weight of water. The composition may be made by bringing the ingredients together in the stated proportions at a temperature below -20 DEG C., preferably at -50 DEG C., and then raising the temperature to effect solution. Filamentary material may be made by conventional dryspinning methods from the composition and the product may be heat-set, preferably while in fabric form. Preferred heat-setting conditions comprise dry heat at 210-250 DEG C. for 20-180 seconds, or steam at 10-50 p.s.i.g. for 5-30 mins. The former treatment may also be followed by exposure to steam at atmospheric pressure (substantially 100 DEG C.) for 10-60 mins. U.S.A. Specifications 2,346,350 and 2,362,182 are referred to.
