Abstract

In the manufacture of aliphatic esters of cellulose by treating cellulose with an aliphatic acid anhydride in the presence of at least sufficient of an aliphatic acid containing 2-4 carbon atoms to dissolve the cellulose ester as it is formed and of not more than 1 per cent by weight (on the dry cellulose) of sulphuric acid as catalyst, the sulphuric acid is dispersed uniformly throughout the cellulose in the course of an activating pretreatment with an aliphatic acid containing 1-4 carbon atoms, and esterification is effected at a temperature which reaches at least 50 DEG C. and may be as high as the boiling point of the acid. In the case of cellulose acetate pretreatment may be effected with acetic and sulphuric acids or with acetic acid, acetic anhydride and sulphuric acid. Prior to activation the cellulose may be treated with water or dilute sulphuric acid. The primary triesters produced as described above may be subsequently hydrolysed to the secondary esters. The process is also applicable to the manufacture of cellulose propionate, butyrate, acetate propionate and acetate-butyrate.
