Abstract

Cellulose is pretreated with a lower aliphatic acid (i.e containing 1-4 carbon atoms) in two stages, in the second of which the aliphatic acid contains an esterification catalyst, and at least part of the aliphatic acid is caused to freeze in the cellulose. The treated cellulose containing the frozen aliphatic acid is then brought into contact with and subjected to the action of an esterifying agent. Preferably, the cellulose has an initial moisture content of 5-8 per cent. The first pretreatment stage may extend for a period of at least 2 minutes and esterification catalyst may be absent or may be present in a proportion of not more than 2 per cent of the dry weight of the cellulose. In the second pretreatment stage, the amount of catalyst may be 5-15 per cent of the dry weight of the cellulose, and the treatment may extend for not more than 15 minutes. The esterifying agent may be a lower aliphatic acid anhydride and the catalyst may be sulphuric acid. The process is applicable to the production of cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate or aceto-butyrate. The cellulose may be derived from cotton linters, wood-pulp, bamboo, jute, esparto, bagasse, straws, grasses, hulls of nuts and bark. The cellulose may be treated in loose fibre form or as a felted sheet. The pretreatment or esterification, or both, may be carried out as a continuous process. For the first stage, the aliphatic acid may be anhydrous or it may contain up to 20 per cent of water. The temperature may be at or above or below atmospheric temperature and may be as high as 80 DEG C. For the second stage, the aliphatic acid may be anhydrous or may contain up to 5 per cent of water and it may be in an amount of 2-6 times the weight of the cellulose. When acetic acid is used, the temperature is reduced during the treatment to about 15 DEG C. to cause the acid to freeze. The esterification may be carried out in two stages, in the first of which the temperature rises to and is maintained at 15-25 DEG C. during 1-10 minutes, and in the second of which the temperature rises to and is maintained at 30-65 DEG C. Specifications 665,725 and 683,648 are referred to.
