Abstract

Artificial filaments, straws, tapes, films, and similar materials having a basis of organic derivatives of cellulose and containing colloidal silica are coloured by means of dyestuffs for which in the absence of the silica the materials have no affinity. The organic derivative of cellulose may be an acetate, formate, propionate or butyrate, or a methyl, ethyl, or benzyl ether. The process is applicable to short or long fibres and to yarns, and fabrics of all kinds. Mixed yarns and fabrics containing cotton or wool and cellulose derivative fibres may be dyed with a single dyestuff. Water in the silica gel to be used may be replaced by acetone, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol or other liquid. The process results in dyed materials which may also have an increased scorching temperature, reduced lustre, and no distinct melting point. In an example, sodium silicate is dissolved in six times its weight of water, the solution is cooled and phenol phthalein added. Normal hydrochloric acid is added till the colour has almost disappeared and the solution gelatinizes. The gel is heated, then broken up and washed with water until free from chloride. The product is washed with absolute alcohol or acetone to replace the water in the gel. The silica gel is incorporated in a solution of a cellulose derivative and the solution is extruded into an evaporative atmosphere or a coagulating bath to produce filaments or films. The silica gel may be incorporated with cellulose acetate and the mixture formed into lacquer chips. These are mixed with acetone to form a solution which is extruded with production of filaments or films. The material may be dyed with a cotton dyestuff such as cotton blue FFB or diamine fast blue FFB, or other azo dye. Specifications 450,285 and 465,797 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of inorganic colloids other than colloidal silica. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Silica gel, for incorporation with cellulose derivative filaments or films, is obtained by cooling a solution of sodium silicate dissolved in six times its weight of water, adding phenol phthalein as indicator, and then adding normal hydrochloric acid until the colour almost disappears and the solution gelatinizes. The gel is heated, broken up, and washed with water until free from chloride. The gel may then be washed with absolute alcohol or acetone so that this liquid may take the place of the water in the gel.
