Abstract

519,361. Colouring cellulose derivatives and synthetic resins. SOC. RHODIACETA. Oct. 27, 1938, No. 31109. Convention date, Nov. 1, 1937. [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] An enhanced affinity for acid wool dyestuffs is imparted to cellulose esters or ethers or other highly polymerised organic compounds, which can be worked up from organic solvents, into shaped structures, by incorporating therein, before the formation of the structure, an aralkyl derivative of a protein-or of a degradation product thereof, e.g. an aralkylated derivative of casein, glue, gelatine, albumen, disacetylated chitin or a vegetable protein. Materials containing ester groups may be subjected, during or after formation of the structures, to treatment with a saponifying agent such as a solution of an alkali hydroxide, phosphate, borate or silicate or an organic base, whereby an. affinity for direct dyes is imparted while the affinity for acid wool dyes is retained. In examples, (1) benzylated albumen is dissolved in an acetone solution of cellulose acetate or a methyl acetate solution of ethyl cellulose and tne solution is dry spun to obtain an artificial silk readily dyed with acid. wool dyes ; (2) benzylated disacetylated chitin is dissolved in a glacial acetic acid solution of cellulose acetate and the solution is wet spun to obtain an artificial silk which may be dyed with acid wool dyes ; (3) benzylated casein is incorporated in a solution from which cellulose acetate staple fibre is spun and the fibre is treated with a dilute solution at 80‹C. of tertiary sodium phosphate to obtain a product which may be dyed with acid wool or direct dyes; (4) benzylated keratin is incorporated in acetonesoluble polyvinyl acetate prior to formation of a film to be dyed with acid dyes ; (5) a reaction product of casein with xylyl bromide is incorporated in a solution from which is spun an acetate artificial silk which may be dyed with acid wool dyes.
