Abstract

In the dyeing of artificial foils, filaments, &c. containing plasticizers by treating them with a liquid medium containing a dyestuff the plasticizer content of the materials is maintained and even increased during the dyeing by incorporating in the dyebath a plasticizer in an amount at least sufficient to form a saturated solution. Materials specified are those having a basis of cellulose esters and ethers such as cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, nitro-acetate or acetate-propionate or methyl-, ethyl- or butyl-cellulose, ethyl cellulose acetate or oxy-ethyl cellulose acetate, and of resins, e.g. polymerized vinyl acetate. Dyestuffs specified are 4-nitro 2-methoxy benzene-1-azo-41-dimethylamino benzene, 1-amino-4-hydroxy anthraquinone, 1 methylamino-4-hydroxy anthraquinone, 1 : 4 di-(methylamino) anthraquinone, 2 : 4 dinitro-41-amino-diphenylamine, 2-nitro-41-chloro-diphenylamine and Celliton (R.T.M.).. Plasticizers specified are diethyl-, dibutyl- and diaryl-tartrates, benzyl alcohol, benzyl benzoate, ethyl citrate, triacetin, triphenylacetin, dimethyl- and diethyl-phthalates; the plasticizer employed in the dyeing bath is preferably one which is a solvent for the dyestuff. The dyeing is preferably carried out in an aqueous medium which may contain excess plasticizer in the form of an emulsion and may also contain an organic liquid which is a solvent for the dyestuff or the base of the artificial material e.g. ethyl alcohol, acetone, diacetone alcohol, acetic acid, methylene ethylene ether, glycol monoacetate or ethyl glycol monoacetate. According to the Provisional Specification plasticizers may be introduced into baths other than dyebaths to maintain or increase the plasticizer content of the artificial materials containing plasticizers when these materials are subjected to treatment in these liquid media.
