Abstract
Artificial filaments, ribbons and similar textile materials, particularly those of high denier, e.g. of 500 to 5000 or more, are produced by extruding a mass containing an organic derivative of cellulose and a plasticizer or high boiling solvent therefor, and which is free or substantially free from volatile solvent. Products of lower denier may be produced by subjecting the extruded filaments of high denier to a stretching operation, e.g. at 80--100 DEG C. A cellulose acetate is usually extruded at a temperature of 100--200 DEG C. and under a pressure of 1500--2500 lbs. per square inch, either into air or other gaseous medium or into a liquid such as water, benzene, toluene, ether or alcohol. Orifices of the order of 0,01--0,04 inches are used. The lustre of the products may be increased by subjecting them to treatment with a solvent or swelling agent. In an example, a plastic mass is prepared by working cellulose acetate, di-(methyl glycol)-phthalate, carbon black, Nigrosine black together with a small proportion of a mixture of acetone, benzene, and alcohol which is removed while working. The mass is extruded at 110--160 DEG C. and under a pressure of 1700--2200 lbs. per square inch into air. In a second example, the extruded mass consists of cellulose acetate and methyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate with or without dyes, pigments, or metal powder, and in a third, cellulose acetate and dimethyl phthalate. In a fourth example, any of the above plastic masses is extruded through a smaller orifice, i.e. of about 0,012 inch diameter, and the product drawn down to a denier of about 500. According to the Provisional Specification, the plastic mass may comprise plasticizable materials in general, including polymerized vinyl compounds, poly-hydroxyalcohol-polybasic acid synthetic resins, and other resins. Specification 366,585 is referred to.
