Abstract
535,186. Artificial filaments, films &c. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Sept. 29, 1939, No. 26883. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] Artificial filaments, yarns, ribbons, sheets, and other structures are made by subjecting a molten composition, e.g. a polyamide composition, which is liable to develop bubbles under the conditions of extrusion, to a pressure sufficient to eliminate any bubbles, forwarding the bubble-free composition at a constant rate to an extrusion device and extruding the bubble-free composition, preferably while maintaining it under sufficient pressure to prevent re-formation of any bubbles. The process is of particular utility in the spinning of molten organic compositions subject to bubble-formation as a result of decomposition when in molten state. The process is also applicable to the spinning of solutions of filament-forming compounds. As shown, solid organic filament-forming composition is placed in a container 5 and melted by the grid 7. The molten composition drops through the grid and forms a pool 11 which contains small bubbles 13 as a result of decomposition. The composition is pressed by gear-pump 15 to a pressure sufficient to eliminate the bubbles and prevent further bubble-formation, and is passed to a reservoir 17. It is then metered by a gear-pump 19 to a filter-pack 21 made of fine screens which in addition to their function as a filter also maintain the composition under pressure until it reaches the spinneret and is extruded in the form of filaments. The pump 15 has a greater capacity than pump 19. A byepass 25 containing a relief-valve 27 is provided. If the pump has sufficient slip or back-pressure leakage the byepass may be omitted. The pressure applied to the composition is preferably at least 50 lb. per square inch. In an example, polyhexamethylene adipamide is melted under 10 lb. nitrogen pressure at 280C. and fed to the gear-pump 15 which imparts to the molten mass a pressure of 5001b. per square inch and this removes any bubbles. The molten mass is then pumped through the filter-pack and the extrusion orifices to. form filaments. The filament-forming substance may be a polyamide, polyester, polyether, polyacetal, ethylene polymer, vinyl polymer, polystyrene, or polyacrylic acid derivative. The composition may contain resins, plasticizers, pigments, dyes, delustrants, or anti-oxidants. The pressure may be applied by gear-, screw-, or piston-pumps, or by gas pressure using nitrogen, hydrogen, or other oxygen-free gas.
