Abstract

Articles such as artificial horse-hairs, rods, straws, tubes, threads and sheets are made from polymers or copolymers of vinyl chloride by treating the polymers with a quantity of a volatile solvent, insufficient to give a solution at ordinary temperatures, so as to form a swollen mass, and then extruding the mass into a current of air or an evaporative chamber to remove the solvent. The solvent may be acetone or a mixture of acetone and carbon disulphide. The extruded mass may be stretched while passing through hot water, oil or air and extruded filaments may be twisted after stretching. Loading materials, pigments or dyes may be added to the mass before extrusion. The extruded threads may be solid or hollow. In an example, the swollen mass is formed by exposing grains of copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate to the vapours of acetone until they absorb 50 per cent, by weight, of the solvent.ALSO:Articles such as artificial horse-hairs, rods, straws, tubes, threads and sheets are made from polymers or copolymers of vinyl chloride by treating the polymers with a quantity of a volatile solvent, insufficient to give a solution at ordinary temperatures, so as to form a swollen mass, and then extruding the mass into a current of air or an evaporative chamber to remove the solvent.
